PTR (Rectangular Tubular Profile) is a hollow carbon steel bar, made through hot-rolling. It's one of the most widely used structural materials in construction because of its combination of strength, weight, and price.

A bit of history

Tubular steel profiles became popular during the 20th century, when the construction industry discovered that a hollow section resists more load per kilogram of material than an equivalent solid bar — the same reason bird bones are hollow and still strong. Over time, PTR became a standard in Mexico and the southern United States for carports, warehouses, and light structures, since it offers the strength of heavier profiles with less material and lower cost.
